Contemporary Realism and Liberalism

"This is a 6 page paper comparing contemporary realism and liberalism. Contemporary realism and liberalism are basically conflicting political ideals but aspects of each are encountered in the modern day political arena. Realism is based on the understanding that protection and self-interests of the nation state should be the dominant feature in political decisions, justice, and human interests regardless of moral considerations. Liberalism, on the other hand, bases its idealism on the philosophy that man and thought are universal and the consideration of international law, human rights and democratic peace based on moral considerations are the most important factors in regards to matter of the nation. Obviously the conflicts between the two have been prominent in the course of history. Hobbes believed that wars will always occur between nations because of the realism that man as an animal is always self preserving. Anarchy can only be controlled by the administration of a strong leader from the realist point of view. Liberalism however believes that international law and justice can be attained by moral considerations and man’s overlapping consensus of human rights. In today’s world, democracy is spreading since the end of the Cold War. This democracy is seen as a reason to support other countries who have taken on the liberal philosophy from the liberalism point of view. The spread of democracy and those countries who have claimed to be democratic is only useful if it results in betterment of the state from the realism point of view. Bibliography lists 6 sources. "

Resource Wars: War Over Caspian Oil and Other Reserves

"If the U.S. were to lose control of the world’s resources, the country would come to a very quick stop and lose all rights to the world supremacy it currently enjoys. To prevent the end of God’s country, the George W. Bush Administration has proclaimed war against an “axis of evil” that has to do with any country or leader that prevents the U.S. from this goal. To win, as defined by the United States government, means controlling world oil, water and mineral resources. The axis of evil identified by Bush incorporate the non-participating countries in the Persian Gulf, Caspian Sea, and South China Sea that now harbor most of the world’s resources. These countries will not be allowed to prevent the U.S. from remaining the world’s most powerful nation in terms of resources, no matter the cost. Specific arguement based on Michael Klare's Resource Wars. 2 works cited. jvCspoil.rtf"

No matter the time period, participants or locale, one can analyze any two historical wars and come to the conclusion that their respective reasons were based upon a common denominator of issues, not the least of which is that of power. Defining the parallels that exist between the Peloponnesian and Cold Wars is a task that draws its conclusion upon a very fine line; indeed, while each of these important events have many significant things to do with the another, at the same time they each possess their own particular arrangement within the wide and varied scheme of man's constant quest for power. "“History on Trial: Culture Wars and the Teaching of the Past” by G.B. Nash, C. Crabtree and R.E. Dunn "

"This is a 6 page paper discussing the book “History on Trial: Culture Wars and the Teaching of the Past” (1997). The publication of “History on Trial: Culture Wars and the Teaching of the Past” which describes the heated controversy surrounding the formation of the National History Standards in the mid-1990s, has in itself several controversial issues which makes it a useful tool in discussion forums in the social sciences. The authors of the text, Gary B. Nash, Charlotte Crabtree and Ross E. Dunn were involved in the selection of the committee working on the standards and have provided a background look at the events which took place during the development of the standards. Different issues discussed were the fact that while several historians approved of the constant updating and reinterpretation of historical events in the past and the inclusion of addition of multicultural issues while others believe that history as it has traditionally been taught should not be altered to any extent. The authors provide criticism of their own critics but their close proximity to the situation also provides additional limitations to the work which is provided to the reader as highly subjective in its context. Overall however, it is in a sense a historical document in its own right which like any other event from history is open for discussion or controversy and widely resembles many of the points outlined by the authors. Bibliography lists 4 sources. "
